So you want to be an Olympian?

The USA had held the title as the top Olympic

The USA had held the title as the top Olympic sailing nation, but was passed in the total medal count by Great Britain after Rio 2016. Since Sydney 2000, Team GB has won 31 medals compared to 10 for the United States, with just two coming in the past four games.

Worse than the medal drought, the USA was not even good enough to qualify for all ten events at the past two Olympics, missing out in the Men’s Skiff at Tokyo 2020 and Men’s One Person Dinghy at Paris 2024. But Los Angeles 2028 will be different. As the host nation, the USA automatically gains entry in all ten events. Whew!

For all other nations, there is an entry quota for each of the ten events which meets the total limit of 330 athletes for the 2028 Olympic Sailing program. A system for qualification begins in 2027, with the focus on the World Sailing Championships – held every four years – in which the Olympic classes come together to award their World titles but also earn entry for the Olympics.
