On a mission for the Paralympic Games

When Sailing was eliminated from the Paralympics after the 2016 Games, it was due to mismanagement. World Sailing had delegated responsibility, that entity failed, and World Sailing has been on a mission to right the wrongs.

The problem, however, is no sport has ever been invited back after being eliminated. No go for Tokyo 2020. No go for Paris 2024. No go for Los Angeles 2028. The sport is in the best position yet to be reinstated. and if it happens for Brisbane 2032, the decision will come in the next few months.

Among the initiatives to grow the sport is the World Sailing Inclusion Championships. The inaugural edition was in 2025, and the follow-up has 222 athletes from 40 nations for the 2026 edition on October 5-10 in Portimão, Portugal.

“This is not just a regatta; it is a defining tradition for our sport,” said World Sailing President Quanhai Li. ““It is a powerful continuation of a movement that will shape Para and inclusive sailing for decades to come.

“The core goal of these Championships remains clear: to celebrate ability over limitation. We are here to provide an elite racing platform where every sailor, regardless of physical ability, competes with visibility, purpose, and equity.”
