Getting Tiddley: New Exhibition Explores Canadian Naval Style, Identity, and Innovation

What does it take to look “Tiddley”? In naval slang, “Tiddley” means looking sharp, neat, and tidy. This immersive exhibition invites visitors to “join” the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942, stepping into a life shaped by tradition and discipline. From there, the exhibition follows decades of change, exploring how naval uniforms evolved alongside shifting technology and social values.

“Uniforms are about more than appearance,” says Executive Director Brittany Vis: “They tell a story about who we are, what we value, and how those values have changed over time.”

From the Museum’s extensive naval collection, the exhibition features a curated selection of uniforms that have not been on public display for over a decade.

“The Maritime Museum of BC holds an incredible collection of Canadian sailors’ uniforms,” says James Coates, Exhibits and Volunteer Coordinator: “We are thrilled to share these pieces and the personal, sometimes humorous stories behind them with the public.”

“We wanted to create something that feels both informative and human,” adds Vis: “This is really a story about people, told through what they wore.”

Getting Tiddley: Navy Uniforms from Cap to Boot opens May 1 at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, located at 744 Douglas Street, Victoria, BC.

The Maritime Museum of BC is pleased to offer special admission rates for the duration of the exhibition. All active Canadian military personnel, Veterans, and their families will receive 20% off admission. Additionally, any service member who visits the exhibition in uniform will receive free admission for themselves.
