Dossin (Detroit) Museum Honors Great Lakes Maritime Tragedy Nov. 7–10

A half-century after the Edmund Fitzgerald plunged into Lake Superior, Michigan is honoring the 29 men who perished in one of the Great Lakes’ deadliest maritime Disasters. From November 7 to 10, 2026, Detroit’s Dossin Great Lakes Museum will conduct a four-day tribute culminating in a solemn bell-tolling ceremony—one strike for each fallen crew member.

The catastrophe unfolded during a fierce November gale as the 729-foot freighter journeyed toward Zug Island, loaded with over 26,000 tons of iron ore. Battered by hurricane-strength winds and monstrous 25-foot swells, Captain Ernest McSorley radioed that the vessel was managing the storm. Moments later, the ship abruptly disappeared from radar roughly 17 miles off the coast, leaving no survivors.

Schedule of Events:

  • Nov. 7: From 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., amateur radio operators will broadcast the vessel’s history.

  • Nov. 8: The museum hosts a Lost Mariners Brunch preceding a public memorial service from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Highlights include a ceremonial wreath transported across the Detroit River to rest beside the Fitzgerald’s anchor, accompanied by a fleet of honor vessels and traditional bell-tolling.

  • Nov. 10: Visitors receive complimentary museum entry along with an evening presentation of a documentary chronicling a 411-mile tribute swim.

The Legacy

The vessel remains submerged in 530 feet of water off Whitefish Point. To the people of Michigan, the Edmund Fitzgerald represents far more than an isolated maritime disaster—it stands as a lasting testament to the fury of the inland seas and the brave individuals who navigated them.
