A one design class dictates parameters for sails from size, features, and cloth weight. While the first two variables are fairly manageable, decisions about cloth weight must balance performance and durability alongside material availability.
The growth of the sport, or lack of, has caused sailcloth manufacturers to make decisions that are unkind to class organizations. The latest is how the ILCA 4, which is the youth gateway class for the Olympic singlehanders ILCA 6 (women) and ILCA 7 (men), has needed to redesign its sail.
For many years, the ILCA 4 sail has depended on a 3.8 oz sailcloth that is no longer produced at scale, with the new sail to use 4.93 oz material. In the scope of shifts, that’s massive for a small boat, particularly since all effort is typically made to minimize performance change with equipment change.
And more change is coming as the ILCA 6 also uses the same 3.8 oz material, and has commenced work on the development of a future ILCA 6 MkII sail. The existing ILCA 6 sail will continue to be used through to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games with the new model to be released afterwards.
