Iranian conflict during Olympic Truce

The Olympic Truce is a tradition originating from ancient Greece that dates back to 776 BC, and is intended to secure safe passage for athletes during the Games and, in the long term, promote the idea of working toward world peace. Conflict among countries is not to occur.

It was during the 2022 Games when Russia broke the truce and launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, which has since restricted Russia and ally Belarus from having national teams at the 2024 and 2026 Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) continued the tradition surrounding the 2026 Winter Games, with the truce extending from January 30 to March 22. But given the recent United States and Israeli strikes on Iran during the truce, the IOC has a conundrum.

The 2028 Games are being hosted by the USA.

In a recent statement, the IOC reiterated its support of the tradition in advance of the 2026 Paralympic Games on March 6-15 without saying whether nations involved in the 2026 Iranian conflict have breached the agreement.
