Diver Dies Following Suspected Decompression Incident off Celestún Coast

Local media in Yucatán have reported the death of a

Local media in Yucatán have reported the death of a 24-year-old diver identified as José A. Mendoza, who died at sea on October 7, 2025, after surfacing from a dive several miles off the coast of Celestún, Mexico.

According to coverage in El Universal Yucatán, the young man was part of a small crew aboard a vessel named Simiowhen he began experiencing severe chest pain after returning to the surface. Despite the crew’s efforts to assist him and bring the boat back to port, he was pronounced dead before reaching shore.

Local authorities have opened an inquiry into the cause of death, with early reports suggesting decompression-related complications as a possible factor. Investigators from the state’s medical examiner’s office have secured the diver’s equipment for further examination, while maritime officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the dive.

The remote area off Celestún, known for its deep offshore fishing and diving zones, has seen isolated incidents over the years linked to rapid ascents or extended bottom times. While no official safety bulletin has been issued, the event serves as a reminder of the importance of strict adherence to dive profiles and gradual decompression practices in deep or repetitive dives.

Further information was also reported by Por Esto!, which confirmed that local rescue services and the harbor master’s office in Celestún are collaborating with state authorities as the investigation continues.
