The search for a missing recreational scuba diver off Florida’s Gulf Coast ended tragically on Sunday morning after authorities confirmed that the body of 41-year-old LeeAnn Fay Sellers had been recovered approximately 200 feet (60 metres) offshore from Treasure Island Beach.
According to the Treasure Island Police Department, Sellers entered the water alone for a scuba dive on Friday afternoon. When she failed to return, her husband contacted emergency services, prompting a large-scale search involving multiple local and regional agencies.
Search crews worked throughout Friday evening and Saturday, using both marine and aerial resources to locate the missing diver.
At approximately 6:45 a.m. on Sunday, a fisherman spotted what appeared to be a body floating offshore and alerted authorities. Treasure Island Police and Fire Rescue personnel responded and recovered the body, which was still wearing scuba equipment.
Authorities later confirmed the deceased was LeeAnn Fay Sellers.
Investigation Continues
Officials have not released a cause of death.
The Pinellas County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an examination to determine both the cause and manner of death, while Treasure Island Police continue their investigation.
At this stage there has been no indication of equipment failure, marine life involvement, medical emergency or foul play, and authorities have not suggested any specific factors that may have contributed to the incident.
Reminder About Solo Diving
Although many experienced divers choose to dive independently under appropriate circumstances and training, recreational scuba diving is generally conducted using the buddy system, allowing divers to assist one another in the event of an emergency.
Until investigators release further information, the circumstances surrounding this incident remain unknown.
The Scuba News will provide updates should additional details become available from investigators or the Medical Examiner.
