Assamese singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg has died at age 52 following a scuba diving incident in Singapore. Local reports confirm the accident occurred while he was participating in a diving activity ahead of his scheduled performance at the North East Festival.
According to Singapore-based media, Garg experienced breathing difficulties underwater. He was pulled from the sea by Singapore police and immediately administered CPR. He was then rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was admitted into the intensive care unit.
Medical staff made efforts to stabilize him, but he could not be revived. Reports say he was declared deceased at about 2:30 PM IST.
Garg was in Singapore as part of his engagements for the North East Festival, where he was scheduled to perform. He had risen to national prominence with songs in several languages, including the hit “Ya Ali,” and had a long-standing influence on music both in Assam and beyond.
The news has prompted widespread expressions of grief among fans, fellow artists, and political figures in Assam and across India.
