We have an update on our previous story about the Cuyahoga. The storied vessel has now made her final voyage and has entered the last chapter of her legendary career.

The Cuyahoga is currently being dismantled at Marine Recycling Corporation. A symbol of strength and resilience on the Great Lakes, she is now slowly slipping into history. Visible signs of progress can be seen as the bow shows clear evidence of removal work—a poignant reminder that her time on the water has come to an end.

Though her journey is concluding, the legacy of the Cuyahoga will live on in the memories of those who sailed her and those who watched her glide across the lakes for decades.

Why is the Cuyahoga Being Scrapped?

The M/V Cuyahoga, built in 1943, is on her final journey — towed from Ashtabula to Marine Recycling Corporation in Canada, where she will be dismantled. Over the past few years, the vessel suffered two separate fires, with the most recent incident occurring in Ashtabula. The damage from the second fire proved too extensive, and the cost of repairs outweighed her remaining service potential, leading to the difficult decision to retire and scrap the historic freighter.
