A diver from New Jersey has died following a suspected medical emergency during a wreck exploration dive off the coast of Cape Cod.
Joseph Mazraani, 48, of New Millstone, was diving from his own vessel, Tenacious, as part of a group expedition approximately 150 miles east of Cape Cod in the Georges Bank region. The area is known for its deep waters and historic shipwrecks, making it a popular destination for technical divers.
During the dive, Mazraani reportedly experienced what has been described as a potential medical issue underwater. Fellow divers on the expedition responded immediately, assisting him out of the water and attempting resuscitation efforts onboard. Despite their actions, he could not be revived.
The vessel returned to Fleet Marina in New Bedford at approximately 6 a.m. the following morning, where local authorities were informed. The Massachusetts State Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, and New Bedford Police are investigating the incident.
According to a report at MassLive, no foul play is suspected in the diver’s death.
