A 72-year-old man has reportedly died during a dive at Kampung Paya Beach on Pulau Tioman, Malaysia.
The diver, who has been identified as Low Choon Foi, a retired engineer from Johor Baru on Malaysia’s southern coast, had arrived on Pulau Tioman earlier the same day with 14 friends from Singapore, and was scheduled to leave on Saturday.
Low reportedly entered the water with a buddy at approximately 6.30 pm, but was found unconscious on the beach just over an hour later, with ‘froth coming from his mouth,’ according to a statement from the local police.
He was transported to the nearby Kampung Tekek Health Clinic. He was pronounced dead by medics at around 9.20 pm, who subsequently notified the Pulau Tioman police.
Rompin District Police Chief Superintendent Sharif Shaif Mondoi said that there were ‘no signs of foul play’ indicated in the 72-year-old’s death; however, he issued a caution for divers to ensure they are physically prepared to dive.
‘Low and a friend entered the water at Kampung Paya for a diving session at 6.30 pm,’ Supt Sharif Shaif said in his statement. ‘At about 7.40 pm, his friend found him unconscious by the seaside, with froth coming from his mouth.’
‘The friend alerted the resort management, and efforts were made to rush the victim to the Kampung Tekek health clinic. A doctor at the clinic confirmed Low’s death at 9.20 pm and notified the Pulau Tioman police station at 10 pm.
‘In light of this incident, I advise diving enthusiasts to ensure they are in good health and physically fit before engaging in such activities, and to get adequate rest beforehand.’
Pulau Tioman is an island off the Malaysian peninsula’s eastern coast and a popular scuba diving destination. Much of the diving around the island is in calm, slack water, with more challenging conditions found around some of Tioman’s smaller offshore islets.
