A 51-year-old Colorado man has died during scuba diving lessons in Hilo, on the island of Hawai’i, according to local police.
The man, who has been named by the police as Greg Durocher of Castle Rock, Colorado, was taking lessons at Waiolena Beach Park with his family on 30 June when he complained of difficulty breathing after spending approximately 38 minutes in the water.
He became unresponsive after returning to shore, where his dive instructor and family members performed CPR until medics from the Hawai’i Fire Department arrived at the scene.
Mr Durocher was transferred to Hilo Benioff Medical Center, but medics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Waiolena Beach Park is a small beach park on the shores of eastern Hilo which has a small sheltered swimming area and a rocky shoreline.
A police investigation has been launched into Durocher’s death, however, Hawai’i Island Police said in a statement that no foul play is suspected.
