A new trailer has been released for Whalefall, an upcoming survival thriller that puts a scuba diver in perhaps the most extraordinary underwater predicament imaginable.
Starring Austin Abrams as Jay Gardiner, the film follows a diver who heads into the waters off California’s Central Coast in search of the remains of his late father, played by Josh Brolin. But the dive takes a catastrophic turn when Jay is swallowed by an enormous sperm whale.
The newly released trailer gives audiences a much closer look at Jay’s desperate fight for survival. Trapped inside the whale with his scuba equipment and a rapidly diminishing supply of oxygen, he has approximately one hour to find a way out.
The film is based on Daniel Kraus’ 2023 novel Whalefall, with Brian Duffield directing and co-writing the screenplay alongside Kraus. The cast also includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd.
For divers, the film offers a particularly unusual take on the survival-thriller genre, moving much of its action from the open ocean into the claustrophobic environment inside one of the ocean’s largest predators.
The trailer also establishes that the story is about more than simply escaping the whale. Jay’s relationship with his father and the lessons he learned from him become central to his struggle to survive.
Whalefall is scheduled to open exclusively in cinemas on October 16, 2026.
The Scuba News will leave the scientific plausibility of the film’s extraordinary premise to audiences, but the trailer certainly promises an unusual combination of scuba diving, ocean survival and claustrophobic thriller.
