Ukrainian Diver Dies Following Incident Off Sliema, Malta

A 48-year-old Ukrainian diver has died after experiencing difficulties while diving off Sliema, Malta.

The incident occurred near the Exiles area on Saturday, 29 August, at approximately 2:20pm. Police officers, medical personnel and members of Malta’s Civil Protection Department responded after assistance was requested.

The diver was recovered from the water and brought ashore. He was subsequently pronounced dead, although local reports differ over whether this occurred at the scene or following transfer to Mater Dei Hospital.

Malta’s public broadcaster, TVM News, reported that the man was transported by ambulance and pronounced dead at the hospital. Other Maltese news outlets reported that he was certified dead at the scene.

Police reportedly told the Times of Malta that the diver had suffered a medical episode while in the water. However, the exact cause of his death has not yet been established.

A magisterial inquiry has been opened under Magistrate Joe Mifsud, who has appointed experts to assist with the investigation. An autopsy is expected to help determine what happened.
