Three scuba divers were safely rescued after becoming separated from their support vessel approximately six miles off the coast of Hornsea, East Yorkshire.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue was tasked by HM Coastguard shortly after midday on 27 June following reports of a dive boat experiencing difficulties offshore. During the incident, three divers were left drifting in the water after becoming separated from the vessel.

Rescue crews quickly located the divers and brought them aboard the rescue boat before returning them safely to shore. The disabled dive boat was also assisted following the rescue.

No injuries were reported.

While the incident was ultimately resolved safely, it serves as a reminder of how quickly divers can become separated from their support vessel, particularly in offshore environments where wind, waves and tidal currents can rapidly increase the distance between divers and a drifting boat.

Maintaining visual contact between divers and surface cover is one of the most important aspects of offshore diving. Even a short delay in locating divers on the surface can significantly increase the complexity of a search, especially in open water.

Modern safety equipment—including delayed surface marker buoys (DSMBs), audible signalling devices, mirrors, strobes, personal locator beacons (PLBs) and AIS-based diver recovery transmitters—can dramatically improve the chances of a rapid recovery should divers become separated from their boat.

Dive operators and charter skippers also play a vital role by maintaining appropriate surface cover, conducting thorough pre-dive briefings and having clear emergency procedures in place for lost diver scenarios.

According to Hornsea Inshore Rescue, all three divers were recovered safely and the incident concluded without injury, highlighting the effectiveness of a prompt and coordinated response by the rescue services.

The Scuba News commends the professionalism of the rescue crews involved and is pleased to report that everyone returned safely.
