Newlywed Diver Dies During Honeymoon Scuba Dive in Sri Lanka

A honeymoon trip to Sri Lanka has ended in tragedy after a newlywed Indian tourist died during a recreational scuba dive, with authorities awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Mohammed Irfan, from Malappuram district in the Indian state of Kerala, had travelled to Sri Lanka with his wife just days after the couple were married. According to multiple Indian media reports, the pair were accompanied by Irfan’s business partner and his wife during the trip.

The incident occurred on Friday during a recreational scuba diving excursion in Sri Lanka.

According to information provided by family and friends, Irfan complained of severe chest pain while underwater before losing consciousness. Dive instructors and those accompanying him reportedly brought him safely back to shore before he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

While some early reports have suggested the possibility of a cardiac event, no official cause of death has yet been confirmed. Media reports state that a post-mortem examination will determine the precise cause before his body is repatriated to India.

Local reports identify the victim as a resident of Vengara in Kerala’s Malappuram district. He had been married only around 10 days before the incident, making what was intended to be a honeymoon vacation an unimaginable tragedy for his family.

At the time of publication, Sri Lankan authorities had not publicly released further details regarding the incident, including the exact dive site, environmental conditions or any findings from the investigation.

Although fatalities during recreational scuba diving remain relatively uncommon, diving medicine specialists note that underlying medical conditions—including previously undiagnosed cardiovascular disease can become apparent during physical exertion underwater. Until official medical findings are released, however, it would be premature to attribute the death to any specific cause.
