Search Continues for Missing Diver at Key West’s Vandenberg Wreck

Authorities in the Florida Keys are continuing efforts to locate

Authorities in the Florida Keys are continuing efforts to locate a 79-year-old woman from North Palm Beach who went missing while diving the iconic USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg wreck off Key West. The diver reportedly became separated from her buddy during a morning dive, prompting a large-scale response from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Coast Guard, according to a report by CBS12.

The Search Effort

The search began Friday afternoon after the woman failed to surface with her group. Coast Guard vessels, helicopters, and local dive boats joined the operation, which entered its second day on Saturday. Officials have released only basic identifying details, describing the missing diver as a white female approximately 5′6″ in height.

The Vandenberg Wreck – Beauty and Challenge

The Vandenberg is one of Florida’s best-known artificial reefs, resting in approximately 40 metres of water. Its vast structure attracts both marine life and experienced wreck divers. However, the site’s depth and potential for strong currents mean that dives must be carefully planned, particularly for those with limited recent experience or age-related risks.

Previous Incidents at the Site

The Vandenberg has seen several serious diving incidents over the years. In November 2025, another diver reportedly lost consciousness during a descent and was later pronounced dead. While such tragedies are rare, they underscore the need for conservative dive planning, redundant safety systems, and ongoing situational awareness, especially on deep wrecks.

Continuing Updates

As of Sunday morning, there has been no confirmation of recovery. Authorities have asked that anyone with information contact local law enforcement or the U.S. Coast Guard. The Scuba News will update this story as new verified information becomes available.
