Recreational Diver Dies During Dive Off Alvor, Portugal

A 56-year-old man died after experiencing difficulties during a recreational dive off Praia dos Três Irmãos in Portugal’s Algarve region.

A 56-year-old recreational diver has died following an incident off the coast of Alvor in southern Portugal.

The incident occurred on Saturday, August 22, approximately 1.5 nautical miles, or 2.8 kilometres, south of Praia dos Três Irmãos, according to information released by Portugal’s Maritime Authority.

The man had reportedly been recreational diving with family members when he experienced difficulties in the water.

His brother recovered him from the sea and basic life support measures were initiated. An emergency alert was received at approximately 2:23pm.

Resuscitation Efforts Continued at Portimão Marina

The diver was transported by boat to Portimão Marina while resuscitation efforts continued.

A medical emergency and resuscitation team met the boat at the marina and continued attempts to revive the man. Despite those efforts, he could not be resuscitated and his death was confirmed by a doctor at the scene.

The body was subsequently transported to the morgue at Hospital de Portimão.

The Portimão Maritime Police Local Command is handling the investigation into the incident.

No cause for the initial diving emergency has been publicly confirmed.

Although authorities reported that the diver went into cardiorespiratory arrest, this does not establish what caused him to experience difficulties during the dive. No further details regarding the dive profile or circumstances leading up to the emergency have been released.
