Josh Hartnett’s New Netflix Thriller Below Was Filmed in Newfoundland

There’s something in the water. Josh Hartnett stars in the suspenseful new thriller “BELOW”, coming to Netflix on October 8, 2026.

Josh Hartnett stars as Calvin Penney, a devoted yet overwhelmed fisherman from the isolated community of Snooks Arm, Newfoundland. As a widowed or single father raising three children, Calvin struggles constantly to preserve his broken family.

Plagued by early hardships and personal losses, he carries a deep sense of misfortune. Calvin wrestles with feelings of alienation and self-doubt, convinced that even his tight-knit hometown views him as an outsider with little to offer.

Production for the project took place across Newfoundland, Canada.

Local leaders and film industry officials highlighted the province as the perfect backdrop for a production of this size, pointing to its dramatic natural scenery, deep culture of narrative tradition, and experienced local production teams. Representatives from both the provincial government and Picture NL expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Netflix, noting that the collaboration provides a prime opportunity to showcase the region’s talent, unique beauty, and creative capabilities to a global audience.

In the upcoming teaser for Below, Josh Hartnett steps into the role of Calvin, a local fisherman whose quiet coastal town is plunged into terror by a hostile aquatic force. As chaos grips the community and his son Wade (played by Charlie Heaton) begins displaying disturbing, unexplained symptoms, Calvin must join forces with marine biologist Fonda (Mackenzie Davis) to uncover the dark truth lurking beneath the waves.

Blending tense family drama with supernatural suspense, Below promises an eerie, high-stakes thriller anchored by a stellar cast and Newfoundland’s hauntingly beautiful backdrop. Viewers won’t have to wait long to see if Calvin and Fonda can unravel the mysteries of the deep before their home is completely pulled under.
