San Diego rally wins Invitational Cup

The ninth edition of the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup saw San Diego Yacht Club as repeat champions, topping 19 other amateur teams  on September 9-13 in Newport, RI. But after leading each day, and building a 17-point lead after three days, their experience in the IC37s was put to the test on the final two days.

With one race on the final day for all the marbles, San Diego’s 6.1 point lead did not appear nearly enough too often around the 5-leg course.

“We had an unexpected crash tack come at us, which forced us into that low lane,” said tactician Adam Roberts. “By the time we were trying to come back, everybody was stacked up on the layline and there was no where to go. We ended up ducking everybody. It was a definite down moment.” – Full report
