Pivoting from America’s Cup to shipping

If British Olympic superhero Ben Ainslie finds the money to lead his fourth America’s Cup challenge in 2027, it will be with his fourth team name. He began his 2017 campaign as Ben Ainslie Racing, which then became Land Rover BAR. Needing more sponsorship, he shifted to INEOS Britannia for the 2021 and 2024 efforts, but now is branded as Athena Racing.

However, he has hung on to the BAR acronym and is a partner in BAR Technologies which, unlike the INEOS petrochemicals company, seeks to develop technology that is good for the environment. Even more ironic, BAR Technologies is parlaying their sailing DNA by fitting an oil tanker with sails.

The first ever modern cargo ship purpose-built to combine both diesel and wind propulsion will be launched from a shipyard in Shanghai at the end of May. The hybrid vessel will feature three rigid sails that will allegedly save about 1.5 tonnes of fuel a day.

According to John Cooper of Bar Technologies, the rollout of wind-powered ships will revolutionize the tanker industry. “It’s a massive fuel saving. The numbers are so big that I think, in 18 months, half of all tankers and bulk carriers ordered will have wind propulsion.”

No entries have yet been submitted for the 38th America’s Cup as Defender New Zealand works with the Challenger of Record from Great Britain to organize the event. The two teams have agreed on some details with the venue moved to Naples, Italy after Barcelona, Spain declined hosting another edition. Racing will be in the spring and summer of 2027.
