A dive can start under bright tropical sun and end in dramatically different conditions below the surface. The light changes, but typical dive mask lenses don’t.

Tidal Sports set out to change that with the Eclipse Tidal Mask with Tidal Shift™ Technology, a new diving mask featuring photochromic lenses that automatically adjust to changing UV exposure.

At the surface, the lenses tint in response to bright sunlight. As a diver descends and UV exposure decreases, they transition toward a clearer state. There is nothing to adjust and no lens to change – the mask responds to the conditions around you.

But adaptive lenses are only part of what makes the Eclipse different. Tidal has also incorporated its proprietary Advanced Anti-Fog Film technology, bringing a different approach to one of the most persistent frustrations in diving: keeping a mask clear.

Tidal Shift™ Technology: One Lens for Changing Conditions

Anyone who spends time underwater knows that visibility isn’t determined by depth alone. A sunny surface, shallow reef, shaded swim-through, and deeper dive can all present very different lighting conditions during the same outing.

The Eclipse’s Tidal Shift™ photochromic lenses are designed to respond automatically as those conditions change.

In bright UV conditions, at the surface and in clear shallow water, the lenses tint to help reduce glare and UV exposure while improving visual comfort. As UV exposure decreases, during descent and in overcast conditions, the lenses transition toward a clearer state to allow more available light through.

For divers, that means there’s no need to choose between a permanently tinted lens and a permanently clear one.

For snorkelers, it offers the same advantage when moving between bright surface conditions and underwater environments, or on cloudy days.

The technology was developed around a simple idea: your mask should be able to respond to the environment you’re actually in.

The Anti-Fog Technology Behind a Clear View

Tidal Shift™ may be the technology that gets attention first, but Tidal has spent years working on another problem that every diver understands: fog.

The Eclipse uses Tidal’s Advanced Anti-Fog Film, featured in their award-winning Single Lens Tidal Mask, a proprietary hydrophilic film applied to the inside of the lens.

And that’s an important distinction.

It’s not simply an anti-fog coating. It’s a hydrophilic anti-fog film.

Traditional anti-fog coatings and treatments work by changing the way moisture behaves on a lens surface. Tidal’s Anti-Fog film takes a different approach. Because the film is hydrophilic, it attracts and spreads moisture across the surface rather than allowing condensation to collect into individual droplets.

Those droplets are what create the familiar cloudy, fogged appearance that can interrupt a dive. By spreading condensation into a thin, transparent layer, the film is designed to help maintain a clear view through the lens.

The anti-fog film comes pre-adhered to the Eclipse Tidal Mask lenses, so divers don’t need to start with the usual mask-preparation routine of applying a defogging product before every dive. The film is easily replaceable and is designed for 100+ uses depending on care.

Tidal has been developing and using its hydrophilic anti-fog film technology since the original Tidal Mask launched in 2019. After years of use in diving, snorkeling, and freediving, the technology has become one of the defining features of the Tidal Mask line.

The company’s anti-fog technology was recognized by ScubaLab with a Testers’ Choice award in 2025.

For divers who want additional maintenance options, the Eclipse includes Tidal’s Reef-Safe Anti-Fog Spray, developed with Stream2Sea. The spray can help maintain the film’s hydrophilic properties and extend its useful life.

A Low-Volume Mask Built for the Water

The Eclipse pairs its lens technology with a two-window, low-volume design.

The compact profile is designed to make equalization easier, while the wide field of view keeps more of the underwater environment in sight. A soft matte-black liquid silicone skirt and adjustable strap are designed to provide a comfortable seal and secure, leak-free fit.

The Eclipse is built for scuba diving, snorkeling, and freediving, whether that means a week of reef diving in the day and night, a morning spent exploring from the surface, or a deeper descent where available light becomes increasingly important.

It is designed to fit a wide range of face shapes and sizes, and comes with a protective travel case for taking the mask from home to the boat, beach, or next dive destination.

How do the Eclipse’s Tidal Shift photochromic lenses actually work? Tidal Shift lenses contain photochromic molecules that react to ultraviolet (UV) light. When UV hits the lens, those molecules change structure and darken, tinting the lens. When UV fades, they return to their original structure and the lens clears. It’s the same well-established photochromic technology found in light-adaptive eyeglasses, adapted for the demands of diving. Because the reaction is triggered by UV specifically – not visible light – the lenses respond to real sunlight conditions and clear in low-UV environments like depth, shade, or night. The process is completely automatic and reverses over and over, dive after dive.

Do Tidal Shift lenses get darker in sunlight? Yes. Tidal Shift lenses are photochromic and respond to UV light, darkening (tinting) in bright conditions, whether at the surface or in clear, sunlit water, to cut glare and reduce harsh brightness. Under direct UV the tint engages in about ten seconds. It happens automatically, with no adjustment on your part.

Do Tidal Shift lenses become clear underwater? Yes. As UV exposure decreases during descent, the lenses transition continuously toward a clearer state so more light reaches your eyes in lower-light underwater environments. The transition is gradual and ongoing rather than a single switch (taking roughly one minute to fully clear), which is what keeps visibility consistent as conditions change.

Are photochromic lenses good for night diving? Yes. Photochromic lenses are an excellent choice for night diving because they respond to UV light – and at night, with no UV present, the lenses stay in their clearest state. That means they let through as much available light as possible, exactly when you need it most. You get the benefit of adaptive tinting during bright daytime dives and a consistently clear lens after dark, all from the same mask. Whether you’re diving a sunlit reef in the afternoon or exploring the same site at night, the Eclipse adapts to the conditions without any lens to swap.

Are photochromic dive masks good for scuba diving? Yes! They solve a real trade-off. A clear mask leaves you exposed to surface glare; a permanently tinted mask stays dark when you need light most. A photochromic scuba mask adapts to both, which means less glare on the surface and at the safety stop, less eye fatigue across a long day of diving, and no swapping lenses between conditions. That makes it well suited to scuba diving, snorkeling, freediving, and surface swimming alike.

How do Tidal’s anti-fog films work? The film is hydrophilic, meaning it attracts water. When warm, humid air inside the mask condenses on the cooler lens, the film causes that moisture to spread into a microscopic, transparent layer instead of forming individual droplets. Droplets scatter light and blur your view. A thin, even layer of water lets light pass through, so you keep a clear view.

What is a hydrophilic anti-fog film? A hydrophilic anti-fog film is a physical film adhered to the inside of a lens that manages condensation by spreading it out rather than letting it bead up. Because Tidal’s film is a discrete layer, it can be replaced when it reaches the end of its life.

When a film is finally spent, it can be replaced.
