As nature took its course beneath the ocean’s surface at Ningaloo at the weekend, a resident orca put on an unforgettable display for a group of lucky tourists.

The male killer whale, known to those in the area as Augie, was intent on ensuring all the attention was firmly on him as his female partner stalked three humpback whales, including a small baby calf, on Saturday morning.

Photographer Leith Holtzman was aboard a tour boat travelling out to see whale sharks when he noticed foam churning about 1.5km offshore.

The audible distress of the humpback mother aware her baby was under attack by Augie’s partner was soon contrasted with the beauty of Augie’s aerial feats as he jumped out of the water.

“You could hear mum, the trumpeting of the blow hole, you could hear it quite vividly,” Holtzman said.

Holtzman said he saw Augie jump up at least half a dozen times to the amazement of all those aboard.

“The male was on the edges, porpoising around. It’s not unusual for him to jump out of the water and be a clown — he’s a natural performer,” he said.

“They seem to be well aware of us and they probably have a bit of an understanding that we like to see them.”

But the sheer elevation Augie was able to achieve left Holtzman in complete awe.

“I’ve never seen an orca jump out of the water like this in the 10 years that I’ve been out on whale shark boats,” he said.

“A lot of the time it’s only when customers see the reactions of those that have done it for years that they realise how special what they are witnessing is.

“To go to work and see things like that, it’s absolutely amazing, there’s many a day that I pinch myself.”
