Dramatic end to 2026 420 World Champs

Two final races on Lake Biscarrosse, France brought the 2026

Two final races on Lake Biscarrosse, France brought the 2026 420 World Championships to a thrilling conclusion, crowning new World Champions across the Men’s, Mixed, Women’s and U17 categories. The regatta was held July 3-11.

After six days of challenging conditions, changing leaderboards and a weather-induced lay day, the championship was decided in spectacular fashion. Tight battles unfolded across every fleet, with one world title remaining undecided until the International Jury delivered its verdict ashore.

Men’s World Champions
One year ago, Sokratis Chamarias and Iason Xypas entered the final day of the World Championship in the overall lead, only to see the title slip away and settle for silver. This time, history would not repeat itself.

The Greek duo kept their composure throughout a pressure-filled final day, holding off compatriots Ioannis Tournis and Kyriakos Zaponidis in a thrilling battle that came down to the final race. The two Greek crews crossed the finish line only moments apart, but after discards were applied, Chamarias and Xypas emerged as the 2026 Men’s World Champions. The victory adds another major title to an already impressive résumé that includes the 2025 Junior European Championship and the 2025 World Championship silver medal.

The battle for bronze was equally close, with Italy’s Nicolas Margaria and Edoardo Cavero, last year’s U17 Junior European Champions, securing their first medal in the senior category. Harrison Gandy and Joseph Paul Panebianco from the US finished 20th out of 147 in the mixed / men’s fleet.

Mixed World Title
The Mixed category delivered another Greek success as Jason Panagopoulos and Fevronia Bouzana claimed their first 420 World Championship title together. The pair arrived in Biscarrosse as favorites after winning the 2025–2026 European Circuit and immediately stamped their authority on the championship by opening with two race victories. They finished the regatta in the same fashion, winning the final race to secure the gold medal.

For Panagopoulos, already a three-time Optimist European Champion and Optimist World Champion, the victory marks the beginning of what promises to be another successful international career in the 420. For Bouzana, the title is a deserved reward after narrowly missing the podium at last year’s World Championship. Italy’s Clarissa Panicucci and Davide Simoni claimed the silver medal.

Completing the podium were Neil Marsden and Merle Nieuwland, one of the standout stories of the championship. Returning to World Championship racing at the age of 64 after many years dedicated to coaching, Marsden partnered recent Youth World Champion Nieuwland to claim the bronze medal, proving that experience and youth can be the perfect combination.

Women’s World Title
No fleet delivered more twists throughout the week than the Women’s Championship. Brazil’s Joana Freitas and Antônia Gick opened the regatta with two race wins before slipping down the standings as Greece’s Athina Soulioti and Danae Miranta Angelopoulou moved into the overall lead following a dominant fourth day. Spain’s Beatriz Quintana Ruiz and Savina Vicens Reus remained within striking distance throughout, setting up a thrilling final day.

The opening race of the day shuffled the leaderboard once again, even bringing Sophia Alexopoulos and Ana Gazoni into medal contention. By the finish of the final race, the outcome was still unknown. The Brazilian and Greek crews were locked in a race-long battle, while protests involving the leading teams meant the championship would ultimately be decided ashore.

Following the International Jury’s decisions, Freitas and Gick were confirmed as the 2026 Women’s World Champions. Soulioti and Angelopoulou secured the silver medal, while Quintana Ruiz and Vicens Reus moved onto the podium to claim bronze. Sophia Alexopoulos and Ana Gazoni were the top US Women, placing fourth.

U17 Championship
If one nation defined the U17 Championship, it was Greece. Greek sailors placed eight boats inside the overall top ten and claimed six of the nine available medals across the U17 Men’s, Women’s and Mixed categories, highlighting the exceptional depth of the country’s emerging talent. Leading the way were Faidra Tsoulfa and Lydia Nachamouli, who sealed the U17 Women’s World Championship in style with two race victories on the final day.

Their compatriots Maria Anna Makri and Veselina Troshku claimed the silver medal, while Spain’s Elena Lopez Enache and Giulia Sandri Jordi completed the podium. The top placing team from the US was William Whidden and Ellie Millar, finishing 15th out of 108 competitors.

In the U17 Men’s Championship, Agis Christos Angelopoulos and Georgios Mandilas celebrated their first international 420 medal after sailing together for only ten months. Filippos Portosalte and Andreas Psomiadis took silver, while Italy’s Filippo Osti and Roberto Itocchi claimed bronze.

The U17 Mixed title also stayed in Greece, with Chrysoula Kanellou Kokkinaki and Konstantinos Sourlatzis finishing just one point ahead of Dimitris Spondylidis and Maria Petachidou. France’s Hugues Willot and Constance Sauge-Merle completed the podium.

Greece’s remarkable championship was recognized once again with the Francis Mouvet Trophy, awarded to the best-performing nation of the event. With ten medals across all categories, the Greek team once again demonstrated the exceptional strength and depth of its 420 program.

The International 420 Class now turns its attention to the 2026 420 & 470 Junior European Championships, which will take place in Lithuania from July 21-27, where many of this week’s medalists will once again go head-to-head on the international stage.
