18-Year-Old Recognised as World’s Youngest Professional Divemaster

An 18-year-old diver has been officially recognised as the youngest professional
An 18-year-old diver has been officially recognised as the youngest professional Divemaster in the world, marking a rare milestone in recreational scuba diving and professional training.

Emily Pelton achieved her professional Divemaster certification on February 2, 2026, completing the final stage of training in Monterey, California. The record has been verified by Atlas World Records, which confirmed that no younger diver has previously obtained a full professional Divemaster qualification under recognised international standards.

Unlike junior or youth leadership programmes, professional Divemaster certification requires candidates to meet adult training criteria, complete extensive in-water leadership experience, and demonstrate the ability to supervise certified divers safely in open water. This distinction is key, as the record applies specifically to professional-level certification, not junior equivalents.

Pelton’s progression through diving began several years earlier, with a steady climb through recreational and advanced levels before earning a Master Diver rating at 17. From there, she moved directly into professional training, focusing on dive supervision, risk management, and diver mentoring rather than speed or publicity.

According to the record documentation published by Atlas World Records, the verification process included a review of historical certifications and publicly available records to ensure no younger professional Divemaster had previously been certified.

While young divers regularly excel in training environments, professional certification at this age remains extremely uncommon due to the experience, responsibility, and maturity required. Pelton’s achievement highlights a growing trend of highly dedicated young divers pursuing long-term careers in the industry, while still standing out as an exceptional case.

Following the recognition, Pelton plans to continue her education in marine science and biology, with ambitions that combine professional diving with ocean research and conservation.
