When To Go Scuba Diving with Sea Turtles in Hawaii

Honu — as sea turtles are known in Hawaii —

Honu — as sea turtles are known in Hawaii — are a symbol of good luck, wisdom and longevity. Ask anyone with a C-card and you’ll hear that a green sea turtle is the sign of a good dive just about anywhere. And there may not be a better place to spend some quality underwater time with these righteous dudes than Maui, Hawaii, where larger green sea turtles migrate to mating grounds during the summer.

There are strict laws in place to protect the endangered Chelonia mydas while it nests onshore, but curious ones may hang around on a dive, especially if you’re spending time at one of Maui’s prime sites for spotting the green guys, such as Five Caves on the south side of the island.
