Update on Six Presumed Drowned in Richmond Charter Boat Tragedy as Questions Grow Over Companion Vessel

On June 28, 2026, a Vancouver-based fishing charter business shared

On June 28, 2026, a Vancouver-based fishing charter business shared a celebratory post on the social media platform RedNote, showcasing images of an abundant catch from a joint two-boat excursion. The post enthusiastically described how addictive fishing in the region could be, highlighting that every outing promised unexpected rewards and a guaranteed heavy haul on the return trip.

However, this marketing update was published online at 12:24 p.m.—nearly two hours after one of those very vessels had already met with disaster. The company’s smaller nine-meter boat, the Top Ocean, had foundered and sunk in the Strait of Georgia earlier that morning. Even as the promotional message went live, a major emergency response involving military assets and the Canadian Coast Guard was already actively searching the waters for survivors.

The Incident on the Water

The ill-fated Top Ocean transmitted its final GPS tracking signal at 10:35 a.m. Over an hour later, at approximately 11:45 a.m., crew members aboard a passing recreational sailboat spotted people struggling in the ocean and immediately broadcasted a distress call.

Human Toll and Casualties

Of the ten individuals who were aboard the vessel, search teams managed to rescue only four from the water. Tragically, one female survivor later succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to the hospital. The remaining six individuals—including the vessel’s 22-year-old skipper—remain unaccounted for and are feared dead. None of those on board were wearing personal flotation devices during the emergency.

The Companion Vessel

While the Top Ocean foundered, the charter company’s larger 11-meter craft faced no such difficulties. The owner of the business was aboard this second vessel, which successfully and safely navigated back to the harbor.

The business owner asserted that both boats set sail almost simultaneously, departing less than five minutes apart.

This specific detail has deeply unsettled and bewildered the grieving family. They are struggling to comprehend how the owner, who was navigating the larger companion craft, could remain completely oblivious to the sinking of the Top Ocean despite their nearly identical departure times and expected proximity on the water.

When contacted for comment, the business owner declined.
