Update on MSC Baltic III Grounding near Wild Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador

Live Operations

The Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for overseeing marine response operations to pollution spills, hazardous vessels, and search and rescue.

MSC Baltic III grounding near Wild Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador

  • There were severe weather conditions again last week at the site of the MSC Baltic III.
  • When it was safe to do so, crews conducted vessel and site assessments focusing on the cracks and buckling on the port and starboard sides of the grounded vessel.
  • The assessments noted additional damage on both sides. The port side crack has spread towards the stern and the starboard buckling has migrated forward. The assessment also noted heavy ice on the vessel.
  • A significant amount of debris was found onshore after the last weather event, which is expected following a storm. No oil pollution was observed during the most recent shoreline assessment and drone overflight.
  • When it is safe for crews to access the vessel, the focus will be on preparing for skimming operations to remove any floating oil that remains within the tanks.
