Survey on Sexual Harassment in the Dive Industry (2025)
This survey is about sexual harassment targeting adult men and women in the dive industry. In subsequent surveys, we may address other groups.
Sexual harassment is a significant concern in the diving industry, much like in many other professions. This includes unwelcome sexual advances, inappropriate requests, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Divers can be particularly vulnerable due to the isolated and high-risk nature of underwater environments, where the consequences of harassment may be intensified. Some individuals who have experienced such behavior have reported feeling fearful and unsafe, with the distress sometimes leading to dangerous reactions, such as panic or rapid, unplanned ascents.
Prevalence and Impact:
- Sexual harassment in the diving industry is not uncommon, with reports from divers and dive professionals highlighting its presence.
- The power dynamics inherent in the instructor-student relationship or the vulnerability of being underwater can make divers feel powerless and unable to effectively respond to harassment.
- Survivors have reported feeling fearful and experiencing emotional distress, including feelings of humiliation and helplessness.
- The impact of sexual harassment can extend beyond the immediate incident, leading to social withdrawal.
Addressing Sexual Harassment:
- Reporting:It is crucial to report any instances of sexual harassment, whether you are a witness or a victim, to the appropriate authorities and potentially involve law enforcement if necessary.
- Industry Awareness:The diving community is encouraged to create a culture of awareness and accountability, actively discouraging and addressing harassment.
- Support:Survivors of sexual harassment in the diving industry need access to support and resources to help them heal and cope with the trauma.
- Training:Dive professionals and instructors should receive training on professional conduct, bystander intervention, and how to create a safe and respectful environment for all divers.
- Prevention:Dive centers should implement clear policies and procedures to prevent sexual harassment and respond effectively to any reported incidents.
- Open Communication:Fostering open communication and encouraging divers to speak up about their experiences is vital for creating a safer diving environment.
Asking all divers to answer, not just those who had been harassed.
