A dive boat operating in the southern Maldives has been destroyed after a fire broke out while the vessel was moored near Feydhoo harbour in Addu City.
According to reporting by Maldivian news outlet Edition, the blaze engulfed the vessel while it was anchored outside the harbour, leaving the boat burned beyond use.
Emergency responders from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) were dispatched from the Southern Area Fire Station after the fire was reported. Authorities have not yet released detailed information about the cause of the blaze or the full extent of the damage.
Local officials confirmed that no injuries have been reported.
A member of the Feydhoo Council told reporters that the vessel involved in the incident is believed to belong to Maina Safari, a company operating diving vessels in the region. While the fire destroyed the boat, responders were able to attend the scene and work to control the flames.
Local information cited in coverage by Edition suggested the blaze intensified after a gas cylinder exploded on board, although authorities have not confirmed this as the cause and an investigation is expected to follow.
The Maldives is one of the world’s most popular scuba diving destinations, with hundreds of dive dhonis, safari vessels, and liveaboards operating across the country’s atolls each year. Fires involving dive vessels are relatively rare but can escalate rapidly due to fuel systems, gas cylinders, and onboard electrical equipment.
Officials have not yet released further details about the incident or the circumstances that led to the fire.
