SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) – It has been a record year for dolphin calves. The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program, a Chicago Zoological Society program has been documenting the dolphin population that lives in and around Sarasota Bay, in collaboration with Mote Marine Laboratory. It is the longest-running study of a wild dolphin population ever conducted.
During the 2017 calving season, 19 calves have been documented by SDRP. These 19 calves joined five concurrent generations of long-term resident dolphins in the Sarasota Bay area year-round. Calving season peaks during late spring and summer.
Mote Marine is asking boaters to keep a safe distance from these young dolphins.
