A 12-year-old American boy is recovering after being attacked by a shark while swimming in the Exuma Cays in The Bahamas.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, near Staniel Cay, where the boy was swimming with his brother during a family tour of the islands. Authorities said the child was attacked by a shark before being transported by boat to New Providence for medical treatment. He was reported to be in stable condition on Wednesday.
Police have not released the boy’s identity, the extent of his injuries, or the species of shark involved.
Staniel Cay, located within the Exuma Cays, is a popular destination for swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving, attracting visitors from around the world with its clear waters, coral reefs and abundant marine life.
Although shark attacks in The Bahamas receive significant attention, they remain uncommon. Data from the International Shark Attack File places The Bahamas among the countries with the highest number of recorded unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, but only around 30 confirmed incidents have been documented over more than four centuries.
The incident follows several shark encounters involving American visitors in recent years, including attacks on swimmers and spearfishers in 2025. Authorities have not indicated whether this latest incident will lead to any changes in local safety guidance.
No further information has been released by police, and the investigation remains ongoing.
