The prominent path for young sailors is toward age-based dinghy racing, which can be extended with High School and College sailing. While providing significant structure, staying on the path limits awareness of alternatives, and when the sailor ages out, attrition can follow.
The Storm Trysail Club recognized this threat to the sport, and is now celebrating the fifth decade of the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta (IOR) which seeks to inspire the next generation of offshore sailors, building lifelong connections and a deeper appreciation for big-boat racing.
On October 11–12, the 2025 IOR returns to co-host Larchmont Yacht Club (Larchmont, NY), with nearly 50 schools from 19 U.S. states and 3 Canadian provinces to gather for one of the largest—and most distinctive—collegiate sailing events in North America.
The IOR offers college sailors a rare opportunity to trade their dinghies for big boats, competing in conditions that test seamanship, communication, and teamwork on a whole new scale. This year’s regatta will feature 370 student sailors, supported by more than 110 volunteers across race management, safety, media, and spectator operations.
Backed by the Storm Trysail Foundation, whose mission is to foster safety and growth in the sport, the event remains free for all competitors, thanks to the generosity of donors, local boat owners, and sponsors whose contributions make this unique experience possible.
Beyond the competition, a full weekend of camaraderie and community is scheduled. Teams will be treated to Friday and Saturday dinners, a Saturday evening speaker, and pizza at Sunday’s awards ceremony—a chance to relax, share stories, and network with fellow sailors and future boat owners alike.
New this year, the Storm Trysail Club will introduce the Callisto Cup, donated by Jim and Kate Murray, to honor the team with the best combined performance at both the Larchmont IOR and the Great Lakes IOR held last month. Thirteen teams are eligible for this inaugural award.
