During the 2024 US Olympic Team Trials for the Mixed Dinghy event, there were three teams that ended five points apart. For winning skipper Stu McNay, competing at Paris 2024 was his fifth trip to the Olympics, which speaks to either his dominance or a lack of depth in the 470 Class.
In this instance, McNay was being pushed by new teams, and as this was his final foray at the Games, the competitive selection series offered hope for LA 2028. Only problem is the teams that finished second and third are not pushing forward.
A lack of continuity is a reoccurring issue for USA Olympic campaigns, and there have been no representatives competing in the first two events of the new Sailing Grand Slam circuit. After McNay finished 13th at the 2024 Olympics, there remains a gap for the USA to reach the podium, but Nikki Barnes hopes to close it.
Barnes was 12th at Tokyo 2020 when it was a women’s event, and jumped back in the boat with Ted McDonough for the 2024 trials, finishing a distant 4th in the new mixed configuration. She is starting again with crew Ryan Squires, and after domestic training, will compete for the first time at the 2025 470 European Championship on May 9-17 in Split, Croatia.
