Sailing venue(s) confirmed for LA2028

(June 30, 2025) – The Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic

(June 30, 2025) – The Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games 2028 Organizing Committee finally confirmed the Sailing venue plan, which will include events at both the Port of Los Angeles and Belmont Shore in the City of Long Beach.

The Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing events and the Men’s and Women’s Kite will be held first, in Long Beach, the site of the 1984 Olympic sailing competition. Then the action moves 10 miles to the Port of Los Angeles for the Men’s and Women’s Dinghy, Men’s and Women’s Skiff, Mixed Dinghy, and Mixed Multihull.

“While this was ultimately a decision for the relevant local authorities and LA28, as well as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Sailing was pleased to collaborate with them on selecting venues which will deliver great experiences for the athletes, a great spectacle for sports fans and a great showcase for Los Angeles as a coastal destination,” reports David Graham, CEO of World Sailing.

“Today’s announcement provides some welcome certainty for the athletes and their support teams who will compete in the best waters in the region. We look forward to the work ahead with LA28 and the IOC, plus our national federations and sailors to deliver some truly world-class sport in 2028.”

It had long been assumed the Sailing events would all be held in Long Beach which is a venue with significant history of hosting prominent events.  In November, the US Sailing Team had established a training base in Long Beach, but it became known several months later that other sites were being considered.

The confirmation process got particularly messy when, on April 15, the Los Angeles Times and the City of Long Beach reported that all Sailing events would be in Long Beach, and the LA2028 website also showed Long Beach as the Sailing venue. However, no decision had been made amid a political power struggle behind the scenes, led by LA Councilmember Tim McOsker who promoted San Pedro, located in his district.

The ensuing compromise of two venues was likely due to the requirements for the board events not being met by the Port of Los Angeles, which is the busiest seaport in the Western Hemisphere. The beach space at Belmont Shore and proximity to a smooth water race course are superior and will place the boards alongside the Beach Volleyball, Open Water Swimming, and Coastal Rowing events.
