British adventurer James Ketchell must have been one of those kids that couldn’t sit still. Now 43 years of age, he’s parlayed those tree climbing days to be the first and only person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest, and cycled 18,000 miles around the world.
After his cycling circumnavigation, which seems hard given all the water (he used boats and planes), he then flew around the world in a gyrocopter to become the first person to lap the globe in an autogyro, flying for 175 successive days. Now Ketchell has another goal – be the first person in history to lap the planet via land, air, and now sea.
Sailing a Class40, he departed July 27 from Gosport, UK for a nine month route with stops in the Canary Islands, Cape Town, Melbourne, Uruguay, Antigua, and New York before returning to Gosport. Beyond getting another notch on his belt, the project will connect with classrooms around the world to share stories and educational content as well as inspiring young people to pursue their own goals and dreams. – Details
