It’s typically hard to see how a national sailing federation helps the sport, as noticeable gains for local activity come from “boots on the ground”. But in Australia, a new initiative is aimed at increasing lifelong participation in sailing.
Australian Sailing has purchased 12 DF65 remote-controlled yachts for a two-year plan in which designated clubs in Queensland state will organize activities such as ‘Twilight Sailing’ for members and the local community.
Clubs will host ‘Come Try Days’ and other events that promote inclusive, quality sailing experiences in a fun, social, and safe environment. The goals are to include:
• Older adults looking to stay active
• People with limited physical abilities
• Newcomers who are curious about sailing but not ready for traditional formats
• Volunteers and community members seeking new ways to get involved
“This project is about more than just trialing a new sailing format—it’s about embedding inclusive, community-first practices into everyday club life,” said Australia Sailing. “With ongoing support and resources, we aim to see these programs flourish long after the initial project ends in June 2026.”
