As prominent sailing events seek commercial stability, that is a challenge when these events don’t attain public relevancy. And by one measure, that did not happen in 2024.
Despite a record pace for the Vendee Globe, a more dynamic Olympic Program for Paris 2024, and positive economic achievement by the America’s Cup, the sport has been shunned by the 25th Laureus World Sports Awards, an annual award ceremony honoring individuals and teams from the world of international sports.
Nominees have been released for best Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team, Action Sportsperson, Comeback, Breakthrough, Disabled Sportsperson, and Sport for Good. Recognized sports include Athletics, Cricket, Football (soccer), Gymnastics, Motor Racing, Skateboarding, Surfing, Swimming, and Tennis… but no Sailing.
The winners of the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards are to be announced in Madrid, on April 21, 2025.
