Illegal Fishing Reported in Red Sea: HEPCA Issues Urgent Warning

HEPCA (Hurghada Environmental Protection & Conservation Association) has raised the

HEPCA (Hurghada Environmental Protection & Conservation Association) has raised the alarm over reports of illegal fishing taking place in the northern Red Sea. According to a statement on the organisation’s social media channels, large trawlers and Shanshula boats have been sighted in Gotta Abu Ramada and across the waters stretching from Erg El Kabir to El Gouna.

These destructive fishing practices pose a direct danger to one of the world’s most treasured marine environments. The Red Sea’s coral reefs, fish populations, and wider biodiversity face severe risk from such activity, which also threatens the livelihoods of local communities and Egypt’s diving and tourism industry.

HEPCA is calling for urgent action from authorities, conservation partners, and the public. Divers, boat operators, and residents are encouraged to report any violations through the HEPCA App or via WhatsApp at +201016006640.

Safeguarding the Red Sea remains a collective responsibility. By reporting violations and supporting conservation efforts, the diving community and wider public can help ensure that Egypt’s unique underwater ecosystems are protected for future generations.
