Hurricane Beryl punishes Caribbean

The Atlantic storm season has gotten underway exceptionally early as Beryl on June 30 became the earliest Category 4 on record in the Atlantic Ocean and the only Category 4 in the month of June. Also unique is the storm’s path through the Windward Islands into the eastern Caribbean.

Hurricane Beryl made landfall July 1 on Grenada’s Carriacou Island with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph. The National Hurricane Center reports life-threatening winds and dangerous storm surge conditions are occurring in Grenada, the Grenadine Islands, and Carriacou Island and that residents “should not leave their shelter.”

Threats from Beryl along the United States are not expected, with the next appreciable landmass in Beryl’s path will be Jamaica on July 3.
