According to local reports, a 77-year-old man died on Wednesday following a dive off the coast of Pompano Beach, Florida. The diver, said to have completed over 1,000 dives prior to this incident, was part of a group of six aboard a charter vessel that had traveled roughly 11 minutes offshore.
While diving with three others, the man reportedly surfaced in distress. Once back on the boat, he experienced a medical emergency, believed to be cardiac arrest. Crew members administered CPR and used an automated external defibrillator as the boat returned to shore near North Riverside Drive, close to the Hillsboro Inlet, where emergency services were standing by.
Despite the efforts of the dive crew and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, the man was later pronounced dead at Broward Health North. The dive was reportedly organized through a charter operating out of Sands Harbor Resort & Marina.
