The 2025 Marion Bermuda Race starts June 20 from Marion, MA, with the 645 nm course finishing at Bermuda. Dave Caso with his Cherubini 44 Silhouette, a many-time racer and winner, encourages people to take the leap toward the race:
It’s easy to go online and watch videos of sailing—but you can never fully capture the exhilaration, challenge, and beauty of being on the open ocean.
Back in 2005, a group of skilled local dinghy sailors floated the idea of racing to Bermuda. I volunteered my boat, Silhouette, even though I had no blue water experience. Only one of us had ever raced to Bermuda: Barnes Davis. His experience, knowledge, and expertise in ocean sailing gave me confidence in our proposed adventure.
Unfortunately, Barnes had another obligation and couldn’t join us that year. Without him, the rest of the crew started to question whether eight novice ocean sailors should even attempt the race. But after reviewing the race’s stringent safety requirements—and considering the opportunity to make the journey alongside other boats—I was convinced it was the safest way to venture offshore for the first time.
Looking back, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Since then, we’ve raced several times, meeting new people, making lasting friendships, and even bringing family along. The experience is truly priceless. One crew member once told me the trip changed his life—he never thought he could do something like that. I agreed.
It’s life-changing, even if you only do it once—or even if you had a tough experience on board. There’s something about the race: when you return home, you forget the discomforts and remember the moments that very few people get to experience.
