Canadian Diver Dies After Resurfacing Difficulties Off West Bay in Cayman Islands

A 60-year-old Canadian man has died following a diving incident

A 60-year-old Canadian man has died following a diving incident in Cayman Islands waters near the West Bay Dock earlier this month, authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred on January 10, 2026, after emergency services were alerted to a diver in distress off West Bay, with details confirmed by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, which stated that the man experienced difficulties while resurfacing during the dive.

According to information released by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, crew members from the dive vessel, assisted by the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, recovered the diver from the water and brought him back aboard the boat. The man reportedly lost consciousness, prompting immediate CPR by those on board as the vessel returned to shore.

Emergency medical services continued resuscitation efforts upon arrival on land, after which the diver was transported to hospital by ambulance. Despite sustained medical intervention, the man was later pronounced dead by an attending physician, as confirmed in the official statement issued by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.

Authorities have confirmed that the deceased was a Canadian national visiting the Cayman Islands. In its statement, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service extended condolences to the diver’s family and friends, noting that the death has been formally classified as a water-related fatality.

West Bay is a popular area for diving and water sports, known for its accessibility and calm conditions, but officials have not yet indicated what factors may have contributed to the diver’s resurfacing difficulties. The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has stated that inquiries are ongoing, with no further details released at this stage.
