Ocean Navigator always aimed a bit higher than other boating magazines, targeting what might be described as the semi-professionals among us. It even included a back-page navigation quiz that appealed to celestial navigation practitioners.
The March/April issue was Ocean Navigator’s last, according to publisher Dave Abrams. The magazine was founded in 1985, and for most of its existence was published from Portland, Maine.
Like many U.S. magazines, Ocean Navigator was floundering when Abrams purchased her in a 2021 distress sale. Abrams is CEO of Maritime Institute, a California-based training institution, whose publishing subsidiary also owned Professional Mariner, Pacific Maritime Magazine, Fisherman’s News, and The Log.
