A Prince George family got more than they bargained for on a boat trip near Prince Rupert on Wednesday.
Travis Twizell says his family was on a boat near Digby island in Chatham Sound when they saw four big sea lions swimming nearby.
Shortly after, five killer whales – three adult females and two baby whales – started chasing after the sea lions.
“When we saw the killer whales, we were like – holy cow, they are hunting them!” says Twizell.
He says the sea lions rushed toward their boat, and started going from side to side trying to hide from the whales.
“It was a little nerve-wracking. We were not sure if the sea lions were going to jump into the boat, because the killer whales followed them over,” says Twizell.
When the clouds started to roll in and swells started picking up, Twizell says he had to turn the boat back to the shore, leaving the sea lions on their own.
He says the orcas ended up injuring one sea lion.
“You could see the three big whales backed off, and the two small orcas started to hit against it and take it down. You could tell at that point it was a total hunting training exercise for those babies.”
The other three sea lions made it safe to the shore.
