About Tyendinaga Cavern & Caves in Bay of Quinte, Belleville Ontario

Tyendinaga Cavern and Caves, located just outside of Belleville, has kicked off its 2026 season.

Charles and Elizabeth Koch have dedicated the last 30+ years, putting their hearts, hopes and hard work, into making Tyendinaga Cavern and Caves a safe and sustainable experience for the whole family.

Charlie and Liz have always shared a fascination with geology, which sparked their interest in caving and ultimately led them to this discovery. They now have a passion for educating people on how these natural cave systems were formed, and how they been preserved over thousands of years into what we see today. In the large cavern where the majority of the tour is conducted, you will find ambient lighting, stone stairways, and smooth concrete floors to make it an easily accessible adventure. The limestone walls, with young developing formations, have been left entirely in their original state. For Charlie and Liz, their labour of love has paid off more than they could have ever imagined. They have created a place where people from all over the globe can come explore, understand, and appreciate this enigmatic part of the world.

Since opening to the public, Tyendinaga Cavern and Caves has welcomed thousands of people every summer who venture underground to experience a brief yet eye-opening reprieve from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The refreshing, geo-thermal “air conditioning” on a hot summer day is an added bonus! It is indeed a rare experience and the beauty of it is that it’s only a short drive from the highway, making it a perfect pitstop on your travels.

At Tyendinaga Cavern & Caves, we pride ourselves on offering a sustainable and ethical tourism experience. Maintaining the integrity of the land is extremely important to us. Here are some of the ways we strive to achieve this:

Materials in the cavern and park area (such as stone, gravel and sand) were sourced directly from the property, nothing hauled in or out

Work in the caves was done by hand, using manual or small power tools – absolutely no drilling or blasting
The work that has been done to restore the cavern will last the test of time, due to the natural preservation mechanisms of the underground environment
Geo-thermal temperature control in the cavern all year round – no heat or A/C necessary!
We do not allow people to touch the fossils, formations, or walls in the cavern as the natural oils on your skin can cause damage
Lumber for fencing and pavilion also sourced from the property. Thinning the overgrowth of trees is necessary for the function of the forest.
Water is pumped from an underground stream and returns to the ground, creating a zero waste cycle
We use natural soaps and cleansers in our washroom facilities to prevent harmful chemicals from leaching into the ground
We use a paperless reservation system, eliminating the need to print tickets
Protected park environment invites wildlife
Bat holes in the caves allow them to freely enter and exit, and encourages hibernation in the winter months
We encourage our guests to do what they can as well – please use our recycling facilities, conserve water, and leave our place more beautiful than you found it!
