A large-scale search and rescue operation is continuing in the Baltic Sea after a diver failed to return to the surface following a wreck dive off the Latvian coast.
According to Latvia’s Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, the incident occurred on Sunday, 12 July, approximately 10 nautical miles northeast of the coastal town of Roja. A group of four recreational divers had descended to explore a shipwreck, but only three members of the team resurfaced. The fourth diver remains missing.
Authorities immediately launched an extensive search involving multiple maritime and aerial assets from Latvia and neighbouring Estonia.
The operation has included:
- Latvian Navy patrol vessel P-07
- SAR-2 search and rescue boat
- State Border Guard vessel RK-29
- Latvian Air Force aircraft
- Estonian search and rescue helicopter
- Additional Latvian Navy and Border Guard resources
- Assistance from nearby civilian vessels, including the yacht Dalriada
As the search entered its second day, officials confirmed that additional specialist resources would be deployed, including underwater unmanned vehicles capable of inspecting the wreck itself and the surrounding seabed.
Authorities believe the dive site contains abandoned fishing nets and other underwater hazards that may complicate both diving operations and the ongoing search.
No details have yet been released regarding the missing diver’s identity, certification level, dive equipment or the specific wreck being explored.
Challenging Conditions
The Baltic Sea is home to thousands of remarkably well-preserved historic shipwrecks, making it one of Europe’s premier wreck diving destinations. However, many of these sites present significant challenges, including:
- Cold water temperatures
- Reduced visibility
- Entanglement hazards
- Strong currents in some areas
- Depths requiring advanced training
Experienced divers planning Baltic wreck dives commonly use redundant equipment and carefully planned buddy procedures due to the remote nature of many dive sites.
At this stage there is no indication that equipment failure or diver error played any role in the incident, and authorities have not released any information regarding the circumstances surrounding the diver’s disappearance.
