A 50-year-old diver from Citrus County, Florida, has died following a dive-related incident at the Vandenberg shipwreck off Key West on November 22, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
The diver, Nicholas James Strazzulla, from Inverness in Citrus County, reportedly lost consciousness during the dive and could not be revived after being brought to the surface. Local emergency services responded, but he was later pronounced deceased.
The incident occurred while diving the USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a decommissioned military transport ship intentionally sunk in 2009 to create one of the world’s largest artificial reefs. Located about seven miles south of Key West, the Vandenberg lies in approximately 140 feet of water and is a popular deep-dive site known for its expansive structure and marine life.
Details about the exact cause of the medical emergency have not been released. Authorities have not indicated any mechanical or environmental issues, and there is no suggestion of foul play. The Tampa Free Press reported that Mr Strazzulla was diving as part of a recreational group when he lost consciousness underwater.
The Vandenberg is widely considered a challenging dive due to its depth, potential for strong currents, and the need for advanced certification. Divers are routinely reminded to ensure they meet the appropriate experience level and adhere to conservative dive planning when visiting the site.
Local authorities are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the fatality. As of this writing, no further information has been released pending completion of the official investigation.
