The Marion to Bermuda Race is held in odd years, and promotes a Corinthian event in which yachts and crew are participating for the joy and pleasure of sailing, competition, and the camaraderie that accompanies such an offshore event.
This is not a race for expensive pro sailors, and any boat with a crew member classified as Group 3 (i.e., professional) by World Sailing must get permission to verify they are “fully in keeping with the spirit of the race.”
However, it remains a race, and keeping boats light impacts performance. Freeze-dried food reduces weight, and while the Notice of Race does not restrict it, these “meals” do impact the “joy and pleasure of sailing.” Should offshore races require real food?
An announcement for the 2025 race offered a service to provide “hearty, ready-to-heat frozen entrées—perfect for onboard dining, even in rough weather.” Options include:
• Chicken & Chourico with Rice and Beans
• Pulled Pork Sandwiches
• Beef Stew
• Sweet & Tart Chicken (Faith Paulsen’s recipe)
No mention of wine pairing service… standing by.
